Lighthouse 15 Year Anniversary Ale: Aged for about a year, this limited release ale was hard to find and was brewed at a strength of 8% abv to celebrate their 15th year anniversary in August 2013.
Aroma and Appearance: Pours a dark and reasonably clear amber, bubbly with an inch of foam. The aroma is dark fruits like cherries, some toffee and raisins with a bit of spiced bread.
Flavour: Starts with the dark fruits and sweet bread malt that opens up into toffee, plum, raisins, earth and nuts with a somewhat rich brown sugar finish that is a bit sweet, yet balanced against the other fruity and nutty flavours. Warming to cask temperature intensifies a lot of these flavours.
Overall Impression: This clearly aged well, balanced with distinctive flavours and beautiful malts. If you like malty fruity beers like most barleywines, this one will go down well.
Rating: I give it an awesome rating of 9/10, some nice balance with aging and I can’t wait to see what another year will do.
Food Pairing: Whip up some prosciutto and goat cheese wrapped asparagus for this one and you can’t go wrong.
I have been very impressed with Lighthouse Brewing lately, they seem to be one of the slightly lesser known Island breweries yet they make some of the best beer in their 22 oz series of bottles.
